About the artists
TAKHT is a group of musicians who focus on studying and performing the classical Arabic repertoire, instrumental, such as samma'i, lunga, dulab and vocal forms with special emphasis on the Andalusi muwashshah. TAKHT also explores traditional folktunes from various regions of the Arab world. The group is equally interested in the Persian and Turkish musical traditions. Importance is given to improvisation, both vocal and instrumental, to allow each musician to explore the maqamaat. The sets performed are generally in the form of a wasla (or nawba, as it is called in the Maghreb), which is a suite of several instrumental and vocal pieces all sharing the same maqam.
Directions:
Lerner Hall is the large building on the northeast corner of 114th and Broadway - the entrance of the building is from the Columbia University campus, so one needs to come through the small gates just north of 114th and Broadway, and walk up the side of the building to the main doors. Non-Columbia people will have to tell the guard at the door that they are attending the Turath concert, and will be directed from there to the performance space. A map of campus is at this link - click on section "H" for a close up of Lerner Hall.
