Neoliberalism is sold, and adopted, as the most viable model of development while playing a central counter-revolutionary role in societies still engaging decolonization.
Neoliberal policies have advanced colonial projects by protecting models of accumulation through dispossession and by undermining self-determination and the potential for development. The campaign to neo-liberalize economic, social and cultural life in the Global South, particularly in the MENA region and the African continent, has been rapidly escalating to disastrous impact and with little signs of abatement.
This discussion will explore how policies and institutions of neoliberalism and dependency – the “veiled colonialism” – were established and how they manifest in Algeria and South Africa, and how they are wielded to expand “traditional” Zionist colonialism in Palestine.
We will also consider why despite the increasingly obvious failures and dangers of neoliberal policies; neoliberalism remains so dominant.
The discussion will dedicate equal time to exploring current and potential strategies to confront and challenge colonial and neoliberal institutions and policies.
